Ron Winterink
Inducted November 26, 2008
Ron Winterink was born in Oshawa in 1959 and came to Durham College in 1979 to pursue his college education and also compete in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). Ron was a standout student-athlete at DC in not one, but two varsity sports - soccer and basketball. During his three year post secondary athletic career, the Paul Dwyer CHSÂ graduate achieved provincial award status in both sports.
He quickly established himself across the province, leading his Lords soccer team to the first of two East Regional Championships and an OCAA Bronze medal in 1979-80, at the same time leading the DC basketball program in scoring his freshman season with 12.3 ppg. Over the three years in OCAA soccer, Ron scored 21 career goals in 19 conference games, including leading the team with 9 markers in 1980-81. He then led DC to its first ever OCAA Men's Soccer Championship Gold Medal in 1980-81. On the basketball hardwood, Ron was equally as impressive averaging a double-double over his 3 year collegiate basketball career 11.2 ppg and 10.1 rebounds per game.
He also was recognized as an OCAA Provincial League All-star in his final year and helped start the tradition of excellence that DC Men's Basketball has enjoyed for the past 2 decades. Capping off a terrific collegiate career by being named Durham College Male Athlete of the Year in 1981-82. An outstanding two-sport star for Durham College and very deserving of Hall of Fame status.
